One of the most common questions I get from songwriters, in our course of converstaion, at the NashvilleEar.com Songwriter Stages is, “Where can I get good demos without getting ripped off?”

You’ve heard the old sayings, “If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” and “you get what you pay for,” right? Well, both of those sayings need additional context.

IF IT SOUNDS TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE, IT USUALLY IS:
When it comes to songwriter demo “deals,” and advertised costs, it is imperative that songwriters understand exactly what they will be getting for the money they spend. For example, I have always made sure I obtain the master “stems,” and that it is included in the cost. What is a stem? Each instrument on your demo is an individual audio track, or stem. If you obtain all your stems at the end of your production, you will later be able to reproduce or remix or add too or take away anything from the original demo that you want changed or enhanced, as technology progresses, without the additional expense of doing all of the individual recorded instruments over again. Most studios charge extra for the stems, if they will even give you those. It is a good idea to ask. Finding a studio that will is a plus, even if you pay a little more. This is just one example of the sorts of foresight that go into demo production for the independent songwriter. Do not be afraid to ask questions. If you want a quality end result, it requires quality planning. If if sounds too good to be true, it usually is…but the exceptions are worth the effort, if you take the time to do the research.

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR:
When it comes to songwriter demos, there are many things to consider, when weighing the costs of production. The debate between acoustic versus radio-ready demos rages, technology progress has given us in influx of wanna-be producers who make claims of greatness, economic hardships have caused some white-glove producers to seek other venues of opportunity…and all are reaching for ways to make money. It’s business, it happens. Nothing wrong with the creative juices flowing, right? But when it comes to finding the best deal on independent songwriter demos, this adage is a mixed bag at best. I’ve priced songwriter demos with reputable well-known producers, and I’ve worked closely with other award-winning producers who turn out nearly identical product for half (or less) of the price. Reputation is definitely key. Those songwriters who have more money to spend will seek out the better producers and pay the higher prices. Independent songwriters on a budget want the best value for the most reasonable cost. Many who do not know where to start with demo production should seek references. We’ve all been ripped off, and we’ll be happy to tell you who it was that did it. We’ll also tell you where you can go for quality demos. Don’t be afraid to ask. You get what you pay for…knowledge is priceless.
